Community Transport 1800 035 262

Community Transport is a transport service for people living in their own home that are:

  • frail and aged 65 years or over,
  • younger people with disability, and
  • carers of these people.

Often these groups have limited access to private car transport, or have difficulty using mainstream public transport on their own due to mobility or confidence issues. Services may also be available to isolated people.

Community Transport services are not available to people living in nursing homes or hostels.

Types of Community Transport Services

Community Transport services are provided by cars and minibuses for purposes such as:

  • medical appointments
  • shopping
  • social outings

Passengers are transported door-to-door by drivers trained to provide a supportive service for frail older people and people with disability. Many of the vehicles used are wheelchair accessible.

How to access Community Transport

Contact your local Community Transport provider to arrange an over-the-phone assessment to see whether you are eligible to receive their services.

Then once registered, each time transport is required, a booking must be made with your local Community Transport provider.

Cost of Community Transport Services

Community Transport providers are not-for-profit organisations that receive federal and state government funding through the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care (DADHC) and the NSW Ministry of Transport, as part of the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program. The purpose of this funding is to assist people with services that allow them to stay in their own homes.

Community Transport providers charge passengers a small fare. However clients are not denied a service if they are unable to pay.

Carers can accompany a frail older person or person with disability at no extra cost.
